The 2020 census counted around 260 residents, and the community has long functioned as a small rural crossroads serving the surrounding farms and ranches of the Brazos Valley. Sugarloaf Mountain, the highest point in Milam County, rises near the community and carries deep cultural significance: the 60-acre site is sacred to the Tonkawa people, and the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma purchased the property from private owners to preserve it as a heritage site. To the east, the Brazos River forms part of the county's geography, providing access for fishing and paddling through Texas Parks and Wildlife access points.
